Binti, 9 years old, was diagnosed on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2006 as having diabetes. We noticed that she was starting to lose weight and was drinking a lot of water and peeing everywhere (when we first mentioned this to the vet, she said it was her "protest"). She spent a couple of days at the vets while they tested her and began her initial treatment.

We were able to get a copy of Binti's initial test results from the doctor:

ALT (GPT) 200,4 +

GLDH 22,12 +

Glucose 404 ++

Cholesterol 305 ++

Fructosamine 711 ++

LDH 749 +

Magnesium 0,52 -

Triglyceride 148 +

The vet has put her on Caninsulin (known as Vetsulin in some other countries), which is the only thing that's approved here for dogs and cats in Germany. We were told to administer 3 units in the am and 2 in the pm. We started to research the net and found sites which helped guide us in our decision to not only home test Binti to find out what was going on with her blood glucose levels before administering her insulin, but to reduce her dose of insulin.

Binti only spent a few weeks on Caninsulin: her last shot was on Nov. 27, 2006. We continue to test her every other day and test for ketones when we can. She has had one UTI since her diagnosis - we noticed blood in her urine and took her to the vets the next morning. But, after treatment, she's back to normal.

Binti's personality has changed a bit since her initial diagnosis and treatment. She has gotten much closer to us and schmoozes every chance she gets. She lost her "number" in the pecking order of our five when she fell ill. Now that she's feeling better, she is trying to regain her number two status, and seems to be succeeding.
