These cats and dogs have been tried on a regime of two (or more) insulins simultaneously. This is done either as a basal-bolus regime (a long-lasting insulin to handle baseline BG levels, plus a short-acting insulin to handle expected BG spikes due to meals), or as a basal-booster regime (the short-acting insulin is there to handle unexpected BG spikes for other reasons.)
