Discussion about UK sources of M B-12 starting up at http://www.felinediabetes.com/phorum5/read.php?8,201995,201995#msg-201995. May want to contact Laurie of the site we've linked to and have her update her page with additional source. She did that for me when I sent her the HON site for the US. By all means contact Laurie, but we can always link to this info ourselves too, no reason to depend on others. I've just linked to the FDMB thread you mentioned, but that's a temporary fix -- I think a safer way and more in keeping with the FDMB's nature would be to copy the whole thread to the FD Library, including the links, then link to the Library from here. --Steve and Jock 09:03, 16 Nov 2005 (UTC)

To Add or Not Edit

We hope 17:42, 23 Dec 2005 (UTC) Neuropathy is not always uncontrolled diabetes/hyperglycemia connected. Lucky had bg's in the 500-600 range prior to pork lente insulin with no neuropathy. It did not develop until we were forced to use Iletin II NPH for about 2 months, as Iletin II Lente was discontinued.

At that time, if you only focused on the blood glucose levels, he'd be considered tightly-regulated. However, the "whole dog" was in deep trouble everywhere else, due to a sensitivity to the protamine, phenol and metacresol in the pork NPH.

Within 2 weeks of returning to pork lente insulin (this time Caninsulin/Vetsulin), the neuropathy and all other problems disappeared. When we had this on CDMB, another member realized she was seeing something similar in her dog. Since he is a slow metabolizer of lente-type insulins, this obviously was not an option. The only one left was to begin a 3 or 4 daily shot regimen of R insulin, which has the metacresol only in it. His symptoms also improved after leaving the protamine and phenol in NPH behind.

Am aware of no formal research into this on either a canine or feline level. The cases I've read re: sensitivities are all human.

Dr. Nelson at U/C Davis has stated that every animal, over time, will tell you which insulin he/she responds to best. Having seen what happened with Lucky, I don't doubt this for an instant.

Kathy

I think it makes sense to add this valuable info to Lucky's case study here on the wiki, and link to it from Neuropathy and from a new page on insulin sensitivity. If that's a good name for it. (diluent sensitivity? medication sensitivity? Medication allergy?) Wait a minute, where is Lucky's case anyway?
