They usually occur because of the hormonal imbalances associated with Cushing's Disease and hypothyroidism; treating them reduces the excess circulating lipids. Miniature schnauzers as a breed are prone to this condition spontaneously with no underlying disease.
A low-fat diet supplemented by omega-3 fatty acid geneally helps reduce them. Anticholesterol medication, as humans take, is also available.
